Rey Alvarez was born in 1909 in San Andrés de Rabanedo (León) and then moved with his family to Turon, while still a child. He began his militant activity helping workers who had to hide for the repression after the 1917 strike. At age 15 he began working in the mines and joined the Communist Party in 1924. He was one of the founders of the PCE (Communist Party of Spain) Asturias. He served as regional executive committee member and secretary general of the radius of Turon, later collaborated on the creation of the SUM (Trade Union of Miners). He also participated in the October Revolution of 1934, after which he fled to Leon. He became a senior on the Republican side in the Civil War, to be followed by a final exile. nicknamed "The Boss", was decorated several times by the Soviet Union before moving to the city of Toulouse (France), where the January 25, 2009 died at the age of 102.
